My first week of internship is done!
This was a very exhausting and exciting week.
I may have mentioned this in previous posts, but my quality of sleep is very poor. In fact, oftentimes I sleep deeply around 5- 7 a.m. This does not mean that I always lay awake in my bed, rather that I am conscious of sleeping most of the time. Thus, I often stand up and feel the need to drink water, as my body is just not in “resting mode”.
Now that I have to get up every morning at 5.30 a.m., which is exactly the time when my body finally decides to let it go and fall asleep, I have struggled the first few days. I have about an hour train ride to the university clinic and sometimes I managed to get some coffee, to help me focus and concentrate on what I am doing.
I am trying to relax on the weekend but I also have to/ want to write next week’s articles, so my brain is tired again. Of course, I chose to write some very scientifical stuff. Just so you know, I rewrite the long articles with scientific information quite a few times. I try to include as much details as needed and make it easy to understand. I guess the article I started yesterday will be published in around two weeks.
My internship is going well. It is the university clinic, thus the doctors do not have much time to explain. I was lucky during my internship last year in Internal Medicine, as I was in a very small hospital and the only intern!
Thus, I was able to practice skills that many doctors learn after medical school. Still, I can say my first week was a success and I tried to interact as much with the patients as possible.
In the next two weeks, I will be working in the Angiology department of Cardiology, in the ambulance. I am excited and curious how it will be.
I have been very active this week.
In the hospital, I did not sit once during the entire week. Then, on my way home, I ate a little snack on the train. Once I was home, I relaxed for around half an hour and then put on my workout clothes. I rolled my sore muscles on the foam roller, stretched a little bit and then felt ready to do a workout.
I did not lift very heavy though. I noticed my quadriceps (front of the thighs) got stiff quickly, so I did more exercises for the Glutes & Hamstrings and higher repetitions. Also, Pilates exercises for the Abdominal muscles helped me to decrease back pain.
One of my main tasks as an intern is to take care of new patients and to take blood for clinical examination. I am sure you can imagine that most of the patients in cardiology are not very young. Thus, their veins are small and thin and it can take a while to be successful. Bending over, trying to hold still so that the needle does not to slip, has made my lower back very stiff.
I am going to write an article on how to be active and how to motivate yourself to do a workout when you have a tight work schedule. Just another topic on my long list of articles I would like to write!
Friday was my Rest day.
This was another issue I had to face. In the university clinic, there is no time for eating.
In fact, we do have half an hour of lunch break but not once during this week did we manage to go to the café.
As my brain does not function at all without proper food intake, I took my own food with me. In between examinations, I quickly ate my food and drank a lot of water.
However, most of the other doctors snacked on sugary bars or sandwiches made out of white bread. I didn’t say anything, of course, but it made me very sad. On the one hand, the doctors tell their patients every day how important nutrition is, especially for patients with cardiovascular diseases. On the other hand, they do not practice what they preach!
It did not take much time to prepare my food the evening ahead. Once you get used to this healthy lifestyle and caring for your body, it is not a burden anymore … .
Schedule for the next week(s)
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: New article (nutrition or fitness related) at around 5 p.m.
Sunday: Blogging, 4 p.m.
Lastly, I would like to apologize for not being able to comment on my fellow bloggers’ posts. It is pretty tough to stay up to date on social media, blogging, working out on top of the tight work schedule.
It’s only two more weeks, then I will be more active and read all posts I have missed 😉
How was your week? How do you manage to engage in social media or getting in workouts despite a tight working schedule?
Wish you all a wonderful Sunday!
